Mowing Boat for Lake Weed Removal at Göttingen’s Kiessee

More open water for recreation and water sports

Our BERKY mowing boat was deployed at Göttingen’s Kiessee in Germany. High temperatures had caused Elodea, algae, and other aquatic vegetation to spread rapidly, increasingly limiting the recreational use of the lake.

Our goal was to clear the affected areas and restore more open water for water sports and other recreational activities.

The Challenge

Dense Aquatic Vegetation in a Recreational Lake

Dense aquatic vegetation had spread across large areas of the lake. At the same time, the protected habitat in the southeastern section had to remain untouched.

The project therefore required a flexible solution that could remove aquatic weeds selectively and transport the collected plant material safely to the shoreline.

The Solution

Removing Aquatic Weeds with a Mowing Boat

Using the Front Collecting Rake on our mowing boat, we loosened the aquatic vegetation at a depth of approximately 20–30 inches and brought it to the surface. The collected material was then transported to the shoreline.

At the shore, the Göttingen municipal maintenance team removed the vegetation from the water with an excavator. The wet plant material was allowed to drain for several days before being transported for disposal.

The Result

Several Tons of Aquatic Weeds Removed

Within the first two days, we had already removed an estimated three to four metric tons of aquatic vegetation. By the end of the project, the total amount exceeded ten metric tons.

The targeted deployment of our mowing boat reopened heavily overgrown areas and improved conditions for water sports and other recreational activities.
